Also planned is the opening of an exhibition of postage stamps and postcards connected with Esperanto. Zamehof's worldwide death centennial celebrations are patroned by UNESCO.
The main celebrations in Bialystok have been postponed until May's 36th Polish Esperanto Congress in the city, to be attended by users of the language in Poland and abroad.
Ludwik Zamenhof (1859-1917) was born and raised in Bialystok. Believing that language barriers lay behind human misunderstandings, he decided to create an international language. Esperanto is to date the world's most successful so-called constructed language, with reportedly 30 students completing an Esperanto course every day. (PAP)
