TAX CO-OPERATION: HOW TO AVOID THE RACE TO THE BOTTOM
Annually 170 billion euro of tax revenue is lost due to cross-border tax evasion. The findings of a report prepared by Poland’s Polish Economic Institute show that financial paradises are closer than anyone may think. No longer do multinational companies have to look to the distant Caymans. Brussels, Luxemburg and Ireland are just around the corner.
All European economies have suffered, but France, the UK and Germany have experienced the highest loss – an average of 14 bn euro. This unimaginable amount of money could have met various needs. (The renovation of the roof of Notre Dame has been estimated at 600 m euro - a fraction of the amount.) Poland, having succeeded in sealing the VAT system internally, is now calling EU Member countries for tax solidarity action.
