Tusk met on Tuesday with Antonio Costa, the president of the European Council (EC) in Warsaw. According to him, their conversation revolved around the visit of the Western leaders to Kyiv on the third anniversary of the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

He announced that the special sitting of the EC scheduled for March 6 will focus on aid to Ukraine and strengthening European security.

"I have no doubt that strengthening Europe's unity in the face of Ukraine's situation and against Russia seems absolutely necessary right now," he said. "We realise that the upcoming negotiations must involve Europe. Ukraine also expects as much, but at the moment a lot of issues are up in the air."

He spoke about the EC's plans for strengthening Europe's defence capabilities and added that more information about that would be presented during the meeting on March 6. He also said that on Sunday a group of European leaders will meet in London to discuss common matters regarding defence.

He argued that from the Polish point of view, it is vital to consider the job of defending the EU's eastern border as a challenge of the whole Union and thanked Costa for support on that issue.

He also said "regardless of difficulties, Europe is interested in strengthening cooperation with the United States."

"That's the role our conversations serve," he said. (PAP)
