While Poland is fighting to prevent the southwestern cities and towns from flooding, the government has prepared a major construction plan for the affected areas, Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said.

A government crisis team held another meeting on Saturday evening, this time in the southern town of Glogow, which is currently under the biggest threat of flooding. The fight also continues to protect the region's capital, Wroclaw and the town of Nowa Sol.

"We're already planning the reconstruction," Tusk said. "But of course our priority task is to protect, (because - PAP) it's better to prevent (the disaster - PAP) at all cost than to help in reconstruction later, even if it's efficient and effective."

Tusk also said that "one of the consequences of the flood must be a very detailed map of omissions so that such incidents never happen again."

Tusk said on the X platform later on Saturday that the government is preparing a reconstruction plan for those who have suffered in the flood.

"As the fight for Wroclaw, Glogow and Nowa Sol, among other places, continues, we're preparing a grand plan of Reconstruction Plus," he wrote. "Bridges, roads, hospitals, schools and houses, sports grounds and kindergartens - they will all not only be reconstructed, but will be better and more modern than before the flood."

Earlier on Saturday governors of provinces affected by the disaster presented initial damage reports. The southwestern Dolnoslaskie province, which was hit the most, has suffered losses of close to PLN 4 billion (EUR 930 mln).

Nearly 2.5 million people live in areas covered by the government's national disaster regulation.

Also on Saturday the government expanded the area covered by the regulation by close to a dozen new urban and rural municipalities. (PAP)
