Biedronka, a Polish discount retailer owned by Portugal's Jeronimo Martins, increased its sales to EUR 11.08 billion in 2017, up 13.2 percent year on year, initial data show. In the Polish currency, sales went up by 10.4 percent.

In the fourth quarter alone, Biedronka's sales reached EUR 2.97 bln, up 13.5 percent on the same period of the previous year.

Biedronka's sales made up 68 percent of Jeronimo Martins' total income of EUR 16.3 bln in 2017. The latter figure grew by 11.3 percent year on year.

In 2017, Biedronka opened 121 new stores. In net terms, the discount chain grew by 101 outlets.

Jeronimo Martins' drug store chain Hebe sold goods worth EUR 166 million in 2017, up by 35.6 percent year on year.

Biedronka's main competitor in Poland is Germany's Lidl. (PAP)
