Poland's presidency of the UN Security Council will take place during a very intensive period of international relations, top aide to the Polish president Krzysztof Szczerski told PAP on Monday, stressing that "this May may be historical."
"This May may be historical due to North Korea or a nuclear deal with Iran, among other things," he said.
Poland assumed its non-permanent membership of the UN Security Council on January 1, 2018. Its term of office will end in late December 2019. Poland's rotating presidency of the UN Security Council starts on Tuesday, May 1. For the second time, Poland is likely to preside over the UN Security Council in the second half of next year.
Szczerski announced that an open UN Security debate is planned for May 17. It will be chaired by President Andrzej Duda and will focus on the observance of international law as an instrument designed to solve global conflicts. The second debate, chaired by Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz, is planned for May 22.
"This is a special moment as this May can be very important for global relations, for example, due to the situation in relations between North and South Korea," he said.
"Poland's presidency of the UN Security Council will take place in a very intensive period of international relations and global politics. This May could prove to be historical if all the announcements are fulfilled. Poland's responsibility is really huge," he stressed. (PAP)
