Polish actor and film director Andrzej Seweryn has walked away with Best Actor award at this year's Locarno international film festival in Switzerland.

The award is for his role in The Last Family, a film in which Seweryn plays the late Polish painter Zdzislaw Beksinski.

The film is about the tragic fate of Beksinski's family. His son Tomasz, a music journalist and translator, committed suicide in 1999, and Zdzislaw himself was murdered in 2005.

The organisers of the Locarno film festival wrote on their website that the film is a "powerful and reflective portrait" of "an eccentric family losing its center" and that Seweryn’s performance has the audience "swallowed in an emotional uncertainty which shakes not only the viewer’s soul, but also whoever lives the future’s precariousness, inside and outside the screen, in a quiet chaos of several lives falling apart."
