"Say No to Racism" was the motto of a march held in Warsaw on Saturday in protest against the growing number of racist incidents and as a gesture of solidarity with refugees.

The march was also related to the United Nations' International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination which is observed on March 21.

The manifestation was organised by the United Against Racism Coalition, an informal agreement of many organisations, including the Polish Teachers' Union (ZNP), the Together Party and the Green Party.

"Our border should protect us from enemies but it should be open to all those who need our help", ZNP head Slawomir Broniarz said before the march and underlined that huge responsibility was placed on teachers in this context.

The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination was proclaimed by the United Nations in 1966 in commemoration of the events of March 21, 1960, when police opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa, against the apartheid pass laws.
