Polish agriculture is Poland's and Europe's reason of state, PM Mateusz Morawiecki said on Sunday at a harvest thanksgiving event in Bralin, western Poland,
Morawiecki also announced a government aid programme for rural regions which housed state farms in the communist era.
Thanking Polish farmers for their harvest efforts, Morawiecki said that the importance of Polish agriculture was especially evident under the ongoing coronavirus epidemic.
"In a special year like 2020, with the whole world affected by the epidemic, we are even more aware that Polish agriculture is the Polish reason of state. He added that "in such a year, Polish agriculture is Europe's reason of state."
He also commended Poland's rural population for nurturing national traditions and high moral values.
Referring to the impoverishment of rural regions which housed state farms in the communist era, Morawiecki announced an aid programme designed to raise their living standards.
Jaroslaw Kaczynski, leader of Poland's government party Law and Justice (PiS), sent a letter to the harvest feast participants. In the letter, Kaczynski assured that his party and the Polish government will continue to strive for the welfare of Poland's rural population.
In a special letter to farmers on Facebook, Morawiecki thanked them for this year's successful harvest, noting that it was especially difficult under epidemic conditions. He added that it was thanks to farmers that "there was no lack of bread for even a moment."
"Healthy, fresh Polish food was and is available everywhere, in every corner of the country. We give thanks for this especially on the day of the harvest feast, although we are grateful for this toil and proud of (Polish farmers - PAP) every day," the PM wrote. (PAP)
