Polish tennis player wins French Open to claim first Grand Slam title

Polish teenager Iga Swiatek became the first Pole ever to win the Grand Slam singles trophy of the French Open tennis tournament, at Roland Garros in Paris on Saturday, by defeating Sofia Kenin of the US.

The 19-year-old Pole, currently ranked world No. 54 by the Women's Tennis Association (WTA), won 6-4 and 6-1 in the women's singles championship match.

Swiatek's rival, Kenin, is the WTA World No. 4 and the winner of this year's Australian Open, defeating Petra Kvitova of the Czech Republic, the WTA World No. 7., 6-4, 7-5. (PAP)
