Poland detains Ukrainian suspected of spying for Russia
Polish Internal Security Agency (ABW) officers have detained a 47-year-old Ukrainian suspected of acting on behalf of Russian intelligence, the interior ministry spokesman has announced.

"Based on hard evidence gathered by ABW, the Mazovian Branch of the Department for Organised Crime and Corruption of the National Prosecutor's Office launched an investigation and charged the detainee with participation in the activities of the Russian intelligence against the Republic of Poland," Jacek Dobrzynski wrote on the X platform on Tuesday.
"Since the onset of the war in Ukraine, ABW officers have already detained 44 people suspected of espionage or subversion activities within Polish territory on behalf of Russia or Belarus," Dobrzynski added. "They include Russians, Belarusians, Ukrainians and Poles."
Przemyslaw Nowak, spokesman for the National Prosecutor's Office, said in a statement that the man was detained on March 20.
The suspect, a Ukrainian national born in Russia, "admitted to having committed the alleged acts and provided explanations detailing the ideological motivations behind his actions, which were linked to his ties with Russia," Nowak said.
Prosecutors indicated that the individual was engaged in reconnaissance of military sites in Poland.
If convicted, the suspect could spend between five and 30 years in prison. (PAP)
