The Polish government has secured PLN 1 billion (EUR 234 mln) in an extraordinary provision to help localities and people in southern Poland affected by the current flood, Prime Minister Donald Tusk has said.

The southern regions of the country have been affected by floods after heavy rain increased water levels in local rivers, which flooded roads and houses and damaged bridges and urban infrastructure. A few fatalities have already been reported, though their number will be confirmed after post-mortem examinations establish the cause of their deaths.

"I have turned to the finance minister and, at the moment, we have secured one billion zlotys in reserve for the needs of localities and people stricken by the flood," Tusk said at a press conference on Monday.

"The finance minister has assured me, in line with our expectations, that there will be no shortage of funds for immediate and long-term aid," Tusk added.

According to the prime minister, victims can now apply for up to PLN 10,000 (EUR 2,341) in immediate emergency aid, up to PLN 100,000 (EUR 23,412) in aid for the repair of homes or farm buildings and up to PLN 200,000 (EUR 46,824) in aid for the reconstruction of residential properties. (PAP)
