Azerbaijani Minister of Foreign Affairs Dzheikhun Bairamov announced on Thursday that his country had agreed on a draft peace treaty with Armenia that would end a nearly 40-year-long conflict between the two countries.

According to the Azerbaijani Press Agency (APA), the terms of the agreement include the relinquishment of mutual claims and not deploying any third-country troops along the border between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Armenia's foreign ministry confirmed on Thursday that the peace deal had been finalised, adding that the country was ready to set the date and place for its signing.

"Poland welcomes the consensus on the text of the peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan and hopes for its swift signing," the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs wrote on the X platform on Friday.

"A peaceful resolution to the conflict will contribute to the stability and development of cooperation in the region, benefiting both countries," the ministry added.

The conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, fuelled by past events and the geographical distribution of Armenian and Azerbaijani populations, intensified after the countries obtained independence following the breakup of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s.

In December 2023, Armenia and Azerbaijan agreed to take steps towards normalising relations and reaching a peace agreement. (PAP)
