Poland's Swiatek wins bronze at Paris Olympics

World number one women's tennis player Iga Swiatek of Poland won a bronze medal of the Olympic women's tennis tournament in Paris on Friday.

She defeated Anna Karolina Schmiedlova of Slovakia 6-2, 6-1. By doing it, she became the first Polish player to win an Olympic medal in tennis.

On Thursday, Swiatek lost to China's Qinwen Zheng 2:6, 5:7 in the semifinals. It was her seventh match and the first defeat.

In her opening match, the four-time French Open winner beat Romania's Irina-Camelia Begu and went on to thrash France's Diane Parry in Round 2.

On Tuesday, Swiatek beat China's Xiyu Wang 6-3, 6-4, advancing to the quarter-finals. The following day, she beat Danielle Collins of the US 6-1, 2-6, 4-1, advancing to the semifinals.

Swiatek is a five-time Grand Slam champion. At her first Summer Olympics in Tokyo in 2021, Swiatek only reached the second round. (PAP)
