Poland's Julia Szeremeta claimed silver in the final of the women's 57 kg boxing competition at the Paris Olympics on Saturday, becoming the first Polish female boxer to ever win an Olympic medal.

Szeremeta, who turns 21 in two weeks, lost out on a unanimous points decision to two-time world champion Lin Yu-ting of Taiwan.

The 28-year Lin, who identifies as a woman, was disqualified from last year’s World Championships after the International Boxing Association (IBA) determined that the boxer failed gender tests—possessing XY chromosomes like men instead of XX like women.

This disqualified her from competing in women’s events, but despite this, Lin was accepted into the Paris Olympics, sparking ongoing controversy.

Szeremeta is the first Polish boxer to earn a podium place since 1992 when Wojciech Bartnik won bronze in Barcelona.

This is also the first Olympic boxing final for Poland since 1980, when Pawel Skrzecz also won silver at the Moscow Games. (PAP)
