Radoslaw Sikorski, the Polish foreign minister, canceled a planned trip to Michigan on Friday and Saturday due to an urgent cabinet meeting on the ongoing flood situation, the foreign ministry has said.

Katarzyna Rybka-Iwanska, the spokesperson for the Polish Embassy in Washington, confirmed to PAP on Thursday that the reason for shortening Sikorski's US visit, which began on Friday, was an emergency Cabinet meeting on Saturday, addressing the budget in light of the flooding which had hit southwestern Poland.

According to the original itinerary, the minister was set to meet with representatives of the Polish community in the Detroit suburbs of Michigan, a region considered crucial for the US presidential election results. In an interview with PAP, Sikorski had expressed the intention to encourage Polish Americans to vote for pro-NATO candidates. The visit to the General Dynamics Land Systems facility, the manufacturer of Abrams tanks, was also on the agenda.

Despite the earlier departure, the minister is scheduled to meet with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on Thursday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York. (PAP)
