In an interview for the French television broadcaster LCI aired on Sunday, Duda said that Emmanuel Macron's proposal to extend the protection of France's nuclear deterrence force over its European partners and what it would entail could be up for discussion.

"Every form of allied cooperation that increases our security is valuable to us," Duda said. "I welcomed President Macron's idea with satisfaction because it was a gesture that showed France's sense of responsibility also for European security, for its allies, including Poland," he added.

Duda said that European countries should be ready to defend themselves, adding that now was the time to correct Europe's error of not strengthening its defences sufficiently.

"We must remedy the mistake that we made as Europe, of weakening our military strength, reducing our security levels, our deterrence potential," he said and added that Russia would remain a danger to other countries as long as it followed an imperialist ideology. (PAP)
