Inventor Olga Malinkiewicz is the first Pole in history to receive the prestigious European Inventor Award presented by the European Patent Office (EPO).
On Tuesday, she was presented with the award at a ceremony at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in Malta for inventing perovskite coated solar cells.
These flexible foil-printed lightweight solar cells allow for generating energy from sunlight and artificial light and can be attached to many surfaces, from windows to tents.
Inventors from Finland and France were also nominated in the same category.
Dr Malinkiewicz and her team were also awarded the "Popular Prize", the award category chosen by the public.
Perovskite cells, named after Lev Perovsky, a 19th-century Russian geologist, are considered by many experts to be the future of photovoltaics. They are lighter, more efficient and cheaper solar materials than silicon cells commonly used today. (PAP)
