The 'Solidarity' trade union, on Thursday, held a demonstration in Warsaw in front of the PGE energy company (PGE) in protest against proposed coal-powered electrical plant closures.

The planned closures include Rybnik, Dolna Odra, and Loziska electrical plants in southern Poland.

The protest started at Mysia Street in central Warsaw in front of the PGE headquarters at 11.00am. The unionists carried flags and banners calling on leaders to address Poland's energy security. Demonstrators used sirens, vuvuzela trumpets, and drums during the protest.

Later, the protestors walked to the Ministry of State Assets on Krucza Street where a picket was held at 1.00pm. The protest ended at 4pm.

The first petition prepared by the protesters was addressed to PGE and contests the shutdown of Rybnik and Dolna Odra coal power plants. The second petition was submitted to the Ministry of State Assets, which supervises energy companies. The unionists called for the ministry to intervene over the planned closures.

The union also calls for opposition to the European Union's climate policy.

Dominik Kolorz, the leader of the Silesian branch of the 'Solidarity' workers' union told PAP on Thursday, that the protest seeks to convince the government that "further navigation into the renewable energy sources will be a catastrophe."

"We are going to protest, to fight, so there will be electricity in Polish homes, cheap electricity," Kolorz added. (PAP)
