The governor of the Mazowieckie province has announced the approval of a site for Poland's Central Transportation Hub (CPK) project.

The CPK is a flagship multi-billion-zloty infrastructure project of the previous Law and Justice (PiS) government, encompassing a mega-airport, as well as a rail and road network, located in the central city of Baranow, between Warsaw and Lodz.

"Yesterday, I issued a site decision for the Central Transportation Hub project," Mariusz Frankowski said at a press conference on Thursday.

The governor also referred to the project's immense scale, mentioning that it included 2,339 plots and 2,600 hectares across three municipalities.

Infrastructure Minister Dariusz Klimczak, also present at the press conference, said that obtaining the location decision was a crucial step in the CPK project, paving the way for building permit applications.

Deputy Infrastructure Minister Maciej Lasek said the CPK would primarily serve network carriers, while the Warsaw-Modlin and Radom airports would cater to low-cost carriers.

The new airport is to be initially adapted to handle 34 million passengers per year and its design allows for adaptable expansion in the future.

The estimated cost of the investment until 2032 is PLN 131.7 billion (EUR 31 bln). (PAP)
