The new Polish government has presented state-funded in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment programme for the years 2024-2028.

Legislation granting state-funded IVF was passed by the country’s parliament in December 2023, reversing a decision by the socially-conservative government of the Law and Justice (PiS) party to cut off the IVF funding.

The pro-EU coalition government under Donald Tusk set the programme budget at PLN 2.5 billion (EUR 590 million) from June 1, 2024, to December 31, 2028.

Izabela Leszczyna, the health minister, presented two programmes covered by the funding scheme, "the medical support programmes for in vitro fertilisation and in vitro infertility treatment."

These solutions aim to "restore hope to everyone who wants to be a parent," Leszczyna said.

The programme also includes those currently battling cancer and enables them to secure their reproductive material before undergoing "difficult, very demanding and often debilitating cancer treatment". (PAP)
