He added that Trump was expected to attend the NATO summit in The Hague in June.

Earlier in the day, Sikorski took part in a meeting of NATO foreign ministers held in the Belgian capital.

At a press conference that followed, he said that it was good that the new US administration was discovering that allies are assets, not liabilities.

"The alliance is an insurance policy in case of what we do not wish for ourselves, but what... may happen," he added.

Asked whether Trump confirms the strong commitment to support under Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, Sikorski replied "Yes, President Trump confirmed it to the leaders, it is still valid and from what we hear President Trump will be present at the summit in The Hague."

The NATO summit in The Hague is scheduled for June 24-26. (PAP)
