Poland has advanced to the top group when it comes to the country's efficiency in fighting human trafficking, a US State Department report has shown.

According to the US State Department's Trafficking in Persons Report, which every year analyses countries for their efficiency in fighting human trafficking, Poland has advanced to the group of Tier 1 countries, or the most efficient ones among a total group of 188 states.

For the past four years, Poland was in the Tier 2 group, along with Azerbaijan, Albania, Bangladesh, India and Tunisia.

"The improvement of Poland's status is an appreciation of our commitment to applying comprehensive measures and pro-active strategies in the fight against this crime," the Polish Ministry of Interior said in a statement on Wednesday. "This achievement underlines the importance of persistent and coordinated actions in ensuring significant progress in countering human trafficking."

According to the ministry, Poland's advancement was motivated by a range of tangible actions, including an increased number of indictments and convictions against the perpetrators, increased funding for combating human trafficking and aid to the victims as well as raising the profile of the country's Anti-Trafficking Team.
