Publically funding in vitro fertilisation (IVF) treatment will start from June 1, Poland’s health minister has said.

Legislation granting state-funded IVF was passed by the country’s parliament in December, 2023, reversing a decision by the socially-conservative government of the Law and Justice (PiS) party.

The PiS government decided to cut funding in 2016, claiming there was a lack of money although many suspected at the time the true reason was a desire to placate the Catholic Church.

Izabela Leszczyna announced on Monday at the opening of an infertility treatment clinic at the Southern Hospital in Warsaw that IVF will be funded with public money once again from June this year.

"It is very important that as of June 1, Prime Minister Donald Tusk's government is going back to a good decision, to fund in vitro fertility treatment," she said.

According to her, at the moment, a team of experts at the Health Ministry is setting up competitions for clinics to gain access to provide the treatment at their facilities. (PAP)
