"This is a very good moment, a very good place, a very good circumstance to announce today, with such full conviction and with great pride, and satisfaction, that 2025 will be a year of breakthrough," he said. "A year of breakthrough in the Polish economy, a year of breakthrough when it comes to the competitiveness of the Polish economy, a year of breakthrough when it comes to real, real, powerful, huge investments in our security and in our competitiveness."
He added that "energy is something that must ensure our security and the competitiveness of the Polish economy."
"Today we are symbolically launching a huge investment worth PLN 30 billion (EUR 7.1 bln) and capable of producing 1.5 GW," Tusk said. "This is something that exceeds all measures and expectations connected to wind farms. We’re talking about the biggest turbines in the world and about the future of Polish energy, because this huge investment is only a part of a gigantic project in the Polish energy sector."
Baltica 2 is an offshore wind farm project with a capacity of approximately 1.5 GW. It will be one of the largest wind farms in the world. The investment is being carried out by a state-owned public power company Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE) and Ørsted, a Danish company specialising in offshore wind energy, whose majority shareholder is the Danish state treasury.
"It is worth mentioning that this is just a part of the project. By 2040... we are thinking about 18 GW derived from wind," announced Tusk. He added that this would be "as if we produced as much electricity from wind as four nuclear power plants would generate."
The farm will cover an area of approximately 190 square kilometres, located 40 kilometres off the Polish coast between Ustka and Choczewo. It will be equipped with 107 turbines, each with a capacity of 14 MW. The project's total value is around PLN 30 billion (EUR 7.1 bln), with Poland's PGE involvement amounting to approximately PLN 15 billion (EUR 3.6 bln), and around PLN 6 billion (EUR 1.4 bln) coming from funds under the EU’s National Recovery Plan (KPO). The wind farm's operation is set to begin in 2027.
He added that the farm will be located roughly 40 kilometres off the shore, so it "wouldn’t bother anyone" and that it was important to him, as a resident of the region. He said that investors took into consideration the fact that the investment "should not cause harm to the environment, or the tourist value of the region."
He said that "Poland can now truly become a leader in Europe's growth and optimism." (PAP)
