The deliveries of M1A1 Abrams tanks to Poland from the US have been completed, the Armament Agency has announced.

"A year and a half after the Armament Agency signed the contract, the deliveries of 116 M1A1 Abrams tanks for the 1st Warsaw Armoured Brigade have been completed," wrote the Armament Agency on the X platform on Thursday. "The last tranche included the delivery of 47 tanks and 26 mobile repair stations on the HMMWV chassis."

The tanks had been previously used by the US Marines and underwent a thorough renovation and mileage reset before being delivered to Poland.

The contract for 116 M1A1 tanks was signed in January 2023.

The contract's total worth amounted to USD 1.4 billion, with approximately USD 200 million being funded by the US as military assistance in relation to the conflict in Ukraine.

The contract also covered the supply of 12 technical support vehicles, 8 support bridges, 6 command vehicles, 26 mobile repair stations on the Humvee chassis as well as training and logistic support.

The acquisition of M1A1 Abrams tanks was deemed necessary in order to restore the combat effectiveness of Poland's armoured and mechanised brigades, following the transfer of Polish tanks to Ukraine. Additionally, this decision aims to enhance the capabilities of the Polish armed forces, as they undergo a process of rearmament with this advanced equipment. (PAP)
