Trump announced on Wednesday that his administration was planning to impose tariffs of up to 25 percent on products imported from the European Union.

"We have made a decision, and we'll be announcing it very soon, and it'll be 25 percent generally speaking, and that'll be on cars, and all of the things," he told his cabinet.

Trump also made some controversial comments about the EU itself, arguing: "Look, let's be honest, the European Union was formed in order to screw the United States... That's the purpose of it, and they've done a good job of it. But now I'm president."

On Thursday these statements were addressed by Tusk via a post on X. "The EU wasn't formed to screw anyone. Quite the opposite. It was formed to maintain peace, to build respect among our nations, to create free and fair trade, and to strengthen our transatlantic friendship. As simple as that," he wrote.

The European Commission on Wednesday issued a statement in response to Trump's threats, announcing that the EU's reaction will be strong and swift. (PAP)
