The Polish Press Agency's PAP Science in Poland section and the Ministry of Science and Higher Education on Monday announced the winners of the 2017 edition of their Populariser of Science competition.

The winners include Professor Tadeusz Wibig, Dr hab. Andrzej Katunin, science and art promoter Jan Swierkowski, the "Nauka o klimacie" [Climate Science] website, the "Astronarium" TV programme and the Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN).

The results of the contest's 13th edition were announced at a gala held at the Copernicus Science Centre in Warsaw, with deputy PM and Science Minister Jaroslaw Gowin and PAP President Wojciech Surmacz in attendance.

The competition awards people and institutions who help others better understand the world and arouse interest in scientific achievements among non-scientists.

Poland's development hinges on a close connection between science and economy, Minister Gowin said at the gala.

It is worth investing in Polish science as it severely lacks capital, said Wojciech Surmacz.

Professor Tadeusz Wibig of the Lodz University received the main prize. The jury also offered awards in the categories of Scientist (Dr hab. Andrzej Katunin), Activity Leader (Jan Swierkowski), Institution (Institute of Animal Reproduction and Food Research of PAN), Team (Nauka o Klimacie website creators) and Media ("Astronarium", an astronomy documentary series by TVP Bydgoszcz, a local television channel).
