Jaroslaw Kaczynski, the leader of the previously ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party, now the main opposition, has appealed to supporters for donations following the reduction in subsidies.

The National Electoral Commission (PKW) on Thursday rejected the financial report of the PiS election committee from the parliamentary election that took place on October 15, 2023. According to the PKW, PiS illegally spent PLN 3.6 million (EUR 840,510) on the 2023 campaign.

As a result, the subsidy for the PiS election committee will be reduced by PLN 10 million (EUR 2.33 mln), and the party may be deprived of annual funding for three years.

Kaczynski appealed at a press conference on Friday "to all Polish patriots, to all those who supported us, also in these last elections, to donate even small sums... to our account."

"All of this can add up to a decent amount of money, which will allow us to continue party activities but, above all, to run the presidential campaign because it is at the centre of our interest at the moment."

According to Kaczynski, if the current government wins next year's presidential election, it will be able to introduce "a regular autocracy, dictatorship or authoritarianism."

Mariusz Blaszczak, the head of the PiS parliamentary caucus, announced that PiS MPs and MEPs will support the party financially from September onwards. "The MPs and senators will monthly donate a minimum of PLN 1,000 (EUR 234), and the EU MEPs a minimum of PLN 5,000 (EUR 1,169)," he said.

PiS can complain against the PKW decision to the Supreme Court (SN) within 14 days. If the SN finds the complaint justified, the PKW will accept the financial report. (PAP)
