We plan to cut excise on electric energy to PLN 5 (EUR 1.2) /mWh from the present PLN 20 (EUR 4.7) and transition fees by around 95 percent, PM Mateusz Morawiecki said on Friday explaining his government's conception of avoiding electricity price hikes.

Morawiecki said the excise cut will save subscribers around PLN 2 billion (EUR 470 million) in various costs, as well as about PLN 0.5 billion (EUR 120 million) in VAT.

He added that the transition fee reduction will embrace households and corporate subscribers and is expected to save up to PLN 1.5 billion (EUR 350 million).

Morawiecki said the energy cost stabilisation plan aimed to protect subscriber budgets, prevent local governments from using energy costs as an excuse for raising public service costs, and maintain 2019's electricity prices on the level of the first half of 2018.

"The state has instruments with which to influence price stability in the most comprehensive way, and thereby protect household budgets. We are also introducing the stability mechanisms to prevent local authorities from employing energy prices as an excuse for raising public service costs," Morawiecki explained.

On Friday Morawiecki asked the Sejm (lower house) speaker to call an extraordinary sitting of the house to enable the stability plan's passage before the end of the year. (PAP)
