Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki said before the beginning of the COP 25 UN Climate Change Conference in Madrid on Monday that Poland must be offered special compensation for its effort to change its energy system and reduce emissions.
PM Morawiecki told reporters that it was important to take into account not only the amount of carbon dioxide produced by particular states but also CO2 per capita consumption.
"For instance, on the one hand, such countries as the Netherlands or Belgium are in the lead of countries fighting against climate change, and on the other hand, their per capita CO2 consumption is much higher than in Poland," he said.
According to the Polish prime minister, the EU is trying to exert pressure on the rest of the world with regard to CO2 emissions. "On the one hand, Poland has been reducing its emissions, the EU has also been doing this, but at the same time there are many more, around 50, new emissions appearing in other parts of the world," he went on to say.
PM Morawiecki also underlined transformation costs and said that Poland could make more efforts to change its energy system and reduce emissions but "must be properly compensated" so that it could adjust its energy system.
"Poland has its goals to achieve but the transformation cost must be divided in a just way and our demands must be fulfilled if we are to speak about new CO2 reduction goals," he added.
The conference, in which delegates from almost 200 countries will take part, will be held on December 2-13. (PAP)
