Originally, the exam session was to start on May 4. Due to the coronavirus epidemic, stationary school classes were cancelled in Polish schools from March 12 with schooling being continued by distance learning since then under social distancing rules. The dates and rules of external exams, including Matura exams, have been changed.

Students are required to enter school grounds with their mouths and noses covered. Only after taking their seats at benches with at least one-and-a-half metres between them are they allowed to take off their face coverings.

On Monday morning President Andrzej Duda wrote words of support on social media to Polish students commencing their exams.

"You are starting exams that symbolically take you into adulthood. From today, life accelerates. Fasten your seat belts! You will do well and even very well," Duda tweeted. (PAP)
