Over 320,000 foreigners received work permits in Poland in 2023, the Polish Economic Institute (PIE) public think tank has reported.

The report 'Skilled foreigners in Poland - employment scenarios in the 2035 perspective', published on Wednesday, showed that 54 percent of work permits concerned shortage occupations, 6.5 percent - posts requiring high skills, while only 1 percent applied to high-skilled shortage occupations.

According to the Occupational Barometer, a forecast demand for employees, high-skilled shortage occupations include medical professions (doctors, nurses, midwives, physiotherapists, massage therapists, carers of the elderly or disabled), independent accountants and vocational teachers.

"Such a low indicator of foreigners taking up high-skilled shortage occupations may stem from the required recognition of diplomas and knowledge of the Polish language," PIE economist Katarzyna Debkowska, was quoted as saying.

She added that there are two key factors determining the prognoses of employment of high-skilled foreigners until 2035: efficient administrative process and a sense of security.

"If a comprehensive and responsible migration policy is not implemented in Poland, the chances of an efficient administrative process in recognising foreigners' qualifications will decrease," she said.

"On the other hand, the feeling of living safely in Poland seems to be a factor with a good chance of being realised, while maintaining positive long-term forecasts for Poland's economic growth." (PAP)
