All taxi drivers operating under ride-hailing platforms in Poland now have to hold Polish drivers' licences, according to a new law that came into force on Monday.

The move is meant to increase the security of passengers after numerous sexual crimes were committed by foreign taxi drivers in Poland in recent years, the Ministry of Infrastructure told PAP.

The other objective is to block drivers who do not meet the national requirements.

Polish police have praised the new regulations.

"For us the change is important because drivers' licences issued in Poland are listed in Polish IT systems," said Robert Opas from the Traffic Office of the Police Headquarters.

"So police will now be able to see clearly whether the driver has the (appropriate - PAP) licence," Opas added. (PAP)
