Poland's President Andrzej Duda and Prime Minister Donald Tusk have condemned an assassination attempt on former US President Donald Trump during his Saturday campaign rally.

A gunman shot Trump in the ear at a rally in Butler County, Pennsylvania on Saturday evening. The US Secret Service reported in a statement that the shooter had fired "multiple shots toward the stage from an elevated position outside of the rally venue." The attack left one spectator dead and two others critically injured. The gunman was shot dead by Secret Service agents.

Duda responded to the attack on social media on Sunday morning.

"The assassination attempt on President Donald Trump is a shocking moment not just for America but for the whole free and democratic world," he wrote on the X platform.

"Mr. President@realDonaldTrump, together with your Loved Ones and all the people of good will, I thank God for saving your life. I wish You a speedy recovery and hope that the sustained injuries are not serious and that you will fully recover soon," Duda added.

Tusk also reacted to the news on the X.

"Violence is never the answer to political differences in a democracy. I am sure this is one thing we can all agree on without any shadow of doubt," he wrote.

"I wish President Donald Trump a speedy and full recovery," Tusk added. (PAP)
