Poland’s President Andrzej Duda has said that he had spoken to his Georgian counterpart, Salome Zourabichvili, about the country’s recent parliamentary elections and assured her of Poland’s support for Georgia’s European ambitions.

According to the data presented by the Georgian electoral commission, the election was won by the Russia-friendly Georgian Dream party that has been in power since 2012. The situation has been seen by critics as a move away from democratic standards. The opposition as well as the president do not recognise this outcome and outside observers have suggested that the election procedures may have been violated.

On Monday, Duda wrote on the X platform that he had discussed this with Zourabichvili in a phone call.

"We discussed the deeply concerning situation in Georgia following recent parliamentary elections. I reiterated Poland's unwavering support for the Euro-Atlantic aspirations of the Georgian nation," he said.

The Polish foreign ministry also commented on the situation, publishing a photo of Minister Radoslaw Sikorski on X with a caption that said: "Russia is waging a hybrid war not only against Poland or the West as a whole. It tried to influence the outcome of the referendum in Moldova with bribery and information aggression, and is now doing the same in Georgia."

Earlier that day Zourabichvili had called on the West to support the protest in her country against the results of the recent elections. On Sunday, she said during a press conference that the Georgian voters fell victim to a "Russian special operation." According to her, these "Russian elections" were "a new form of hybrid war targeted at the Georgian people." (PAP)
