Polish Internal Security Agency (ABW) officers have detained a 23-year-old German national who is suspected of setting up a terrorist neo-Nazi organisation, ABW said in a statement on Tuesday.

The detention of Joerg S. (surname withheld as required by Polish law) was carried out in collaboration with German and Austrian special services, ABW added.

"The German citizen has heard charges concerning the setting up and participation in a terrorist organisation classified as armed right-wing extremism of a neo-Nazi nature," ABW said.

The apprehension was part of a German investigation aimed at uncovering a terrorist cell that sought to overthrow the current socio-political framework in Germany and establish a new neo-Nazi state in the eastern region of the country, ABW also said.

Law enforcement agencies have determined that individuals associated with the organisation had managed to conduct numerous paramilitary training sessions involving weaponry and acquired military equipment supplies.

To date, eight suspects have been detained as part of the investigation, and searches have been conducted at 20 sites.

The detainees will soon be brought before Germany's Federal Court of Justice. (PAP)
