Poland's Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has said that the future EU commissioner for defence must have proper financial means to reinforce European defence industry.

Talking to reporters on Thursday, Sikorski argued that it is important to give the candidate for this position, Andrius Kubilius, "real, huge resources to restore Europe's military production capacity.

"It seems there is a chance for greater progress in this respect," he said.

According to Sikorski, the election of Donald Trump as US president meant "a change and consequences."

He said that he had repeatedly praised Trump not only for his words regarding the need for NATO countries to spend more money on defence. "I also praised the form - decisive, emphatic, because when the language of diplomacy was used, it did not reach some in Europe.

"We will now have a meatier language, more unambiguous and more decisive positioning of certain important issues," he added and said he hoped that Trump's presidency would be another "sobering up" as regards defence spending by NATO member states.

"This will be one of the arguments we will use to convince our European partners, for example, to take the new position of EU Commissioner for Defence very seriously," Sikorski said. (PAP)
