Thirty tonnes of crystal-clear ice will be used by participants in the 10th International Ice Sculpture Festival, the biggest event of its kind in Europe. The festival started in Poland's western city of Poznan on Friday.

Each block of ice used to carve the sculptures weighs 250 kilograms.

The first day of the festival featured the Speed Ice Carving competition with 24 participants from 11 countries, including Japan, France, the Philippines and Canada. The participants competed in groups of three.

The contestants were allowed to use chain saws, hand saws, chisels and graters. Interestingly, they used irons to make the ice surface smooth and clear.

In the festival programme, the second and third day of the competition was reserved for the artists' original projects. (PAP)
