Three miners died as a result of a strong tremor in the Murcki-Staszic coal mine in Katowice, south Poland, on Monday. Six other miners are already in hospital, the Polish Mining Group (PGG), the mine owner, said in a statement.

Earlier, the PGG reported two miners had been killed and the third was being transported to the surface, showing no signs of life.

The tremor, measuring 2.66 on Richter scale, occurred at 2:12 pm and affected nine miners working in a tunnel. It could also be felt on the surface.

The incident is the most serious mining accident in Poland this year. A total of 16 people have died in the Polish mining industry since January, including 12 in coal mines.

Polish PM Mateusz Morawiecki has offered special annuities to the wives of the three killed miners. (PAP)
