Caritas Polska has offered EUR 50,000 to Caritas Italiana for ad hoc assistance to people affected by Wednesday's earthquake in central Italy.

The death toll from the earthquake that flattened parts of central Italy rose to 267 on Friday. The magnitude 6.2 quake struck on Wednesday morning and was felt across a broad swath of central Italy, including Rome. The temblor shook the Lazio region and Umbria and Le Marche on the Adriatic coast. The civil protection department in Rome said nearly 400 people were being treated for injuries in hospitals and about 2,500 people were left homeless.

Caritas Polska spokesman Pawel Keska said Caritas Internationalis experts were in central Italy to define the most urgent and long-term needs, and declared that when such a report was ready it would be possible to prepare concrete international projects.

"Caritas Italia is offering ad hoc assistance in the region hit by the earthquake. Caritas Polska has sent EUR 50,000 to help organise this aid and is waiting for information about new projects, Keska said, adding that Caritas from Germany, Austria and Belgium had also offered ad hoc aid.

Answering an appeal from Pope Francis, Caritas Polska has also started a collection of funds for people affected by the earthquake. (PAP)
