NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said on Monday that he had talked with President Andrzej Duda about NATO's response to COVID-19, as well as about transatlantic ties, ahead of the Polish president's visit to Washington.

"Good talk with @prezydentpl Andrzej Duda on #NATO's response to #COVID19 & preparations for a possible second wave of the pandemic. We discussed the collective defence of the Alliance and the importance of the transatlantic bond in unpredictable times," Stoltenberg wrote on Twitter.

The telephone conversation between Duda and Stoltenberg was part of preparations for the Polish head of state's Wednesday visit to the White House and his meeting with US President Donald Trump.

Last week, announcements were confirmed concerning the withdrawal of some US soldiers from Germany. The issue was raised by the defence ministers of NATO countries at a videoconference on Wednesday.

Military cooperation is to be one of the topics of the meeting in Washington. According to the Associated Press (AP), it is possible that an announcement will be made during the visit that some of the US forces stationed in Germany will be transferred to Poland.

Stoltenberg, who had previously spoken with Trump about this matter, said last Wednesday that a final decision had not yet been made on how and when the US will implement its decision to withdraw some of its forces from Germany. (PAP)
