PM Mateusz Morawiecki on Wednesday announced Polish government aid to Lebanon in connection with Tuesday's explosion in the country's capital Beirut, which killed at least a hundred people and injured over 4,000.

Morawiecki wrote on Facebook that the aid will mainly consist of medical materials and experienced rescuers.

Earlier on Wednesday Poland's State Fire Service informed that it was ready to send a 50-strong rescue team, including 39 rescuers with 4 dogs and a chemical rescuer team, to Beirut.

On Wednesday the Lebanese Red Cross informed that the explosion killed at least a hundred people and injured at least four thousand. According to Lebanese authorities it occurred during welding work in a harbour depot containing unsecured ammonium nitrate.

The explosion was so strong it could be heard in Cyprus, 240 kilometres away from Beirut. (PAP)
