Covid-19 infections are "significantly" rising in Poland, a deputy health minister has announced.

Waldemar Kraska told the Radio Plus broadcaster on Wednesday that 3,414 new Covid cases had been reported earlier on that day and ten people infected with Covid had died on Tuesday.

He said that a Covid-19 vaccine specifically for the new 'Kraken' (XBB) strain of the virus is available at vaccination points in Poland, including pharmacies and public clinics, from December 6.

"This new mutation, which is currently dominant, no longer has such dramatic symptoms as the previous variants...the most common symptoms are sore throat and fever," he said.

The jab, made by the Novavax company, is available free of charge to everyone who wants it.

He added that the vaccine is considered highly effective and safe.

According to Kraska, Poland has initially ordered around 410,000 doses of the vaccine. (PAP)
