Poland has activated its air force at its eastern border due to the Russian attack against Ukraine, the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces (DORSZ) has reported, adding that allied aircraft have also been mobilised.

"Due to the massive attack of the Russian Federation, which used cruise missiles, ballistic missiles and drones against objects in western Ukraine, Poland's and allied aircraft have been activated," the DORSZ wrote on the X platform on Sunday morning.

The DORSZ also said that all available forces and resources at its disposal had been activated, that the on-duty fighter pairs had taken off, and that the ground-based air defence and radar reconnaissance systems had reached the highest state of readiness.

According to the DORSZ, all the applied measures have been designed to ensure security to Poland's border regions.

Later on Sunday, the DORSZ announced that it had concluded the operation as Russia had ended its attack against Ukraine.

"...all the forces and all the resources have returned to their standard operational activity," it wrote on the X platform.

The operational command also wrote that the Polish Armed Forces had been monitoring the situation in Ukraine and that all its forces were in full readiness in order to provide safety to Poland's airspace.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday that Russia had launched around 120 missiles and 90 drones in a "massive" combined air strike on Ukraine's energy infrastructure. The attack has been described by Ukrainian officials as the largest over the past months, targeting energy infrastructure and killing civilians. (PAP)
