Andrzej Duda, the Polish president, has appealed to Donald Tusk, the prime minister, and his government to observe Poland's legal order.

On Wednesday the government dismissed the presidents and supervisory boards of TVP, Polish Radio and the Polish Press Agency (PAP) in a move it says is designed to eliminate a culture of political bias that was built up, allegedly, under the previous Law and Justice government.

"No political goal can justify the violation of constitutional principles and laws," Duda wrote on the X platform on Wednesday evening.

"That is why, in connection with today's decisions regarding public mass media, I am calling on Prime Minister Donald Tusk and his cabinet to respect the Polish legal order," the president said.

The government has also established new supervisory boards and they, in turn, have appointed new management teams at the media companies, the Culture Ministry said in a statement on Wednesday.

The move by the government also led to the shutting down of the website of TVP’s news channel and one of TVP’s channels being taken off the air.

Duda also stressed that during its swearing-in ceremony the entire government had promised to observe the Constitution and other Poland's laws. (PAP)
