Poland's prime minister has said that his Indian counterpart has expressed a willingness to personally participate in efforts to bring about a swift and just end to the conflict in Ukraine.

"I am very glad that the prime minister has confirmed his readiness to personally engage in bringing about a peaceful, just and speedy end to the war," Donald Tusk said after his meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday. "We are united in our conviction that India is capable of playing an important and positive role in this matter."

Modi had arrived in Warsaw on Wednesday afternoon marking the first visit to Poland by an Indian head of government in 45 years.

Tusk added that this declaration had taken on special significance especially since the Indian prime minister would be visiting Kyiv in several hours time. "Regarding this visit, we are all convinced that it could be of historical significance," said Tusk.

The head of the Polish government noted that history had taught both nations how important it was to "respect rules, borders, territorial integrity, sovereignty of states, the rule of law."

He went on to say that the whole world admires India for the "consistently democratic nature of its governments," which, as he noted, was something that was not common in that part of the world.

Tusk also remarked that Poland and India had raised their relations to the level of a strategic partnership. "These are not just 'words,'" he said. "At the core of this is our determination and readiness to cooperate in many areas."

Following his visit to Poland, the Indian Prime Minister will travel to Kyiv, where he will hold talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday. (PAP)
