Andrzej Zulawski, one of Poland's best-known film directors, died on Wednesday, aged 76.

Born in 1940 in Lvov in today's Ukraine, Zulawski gained renown with the 1971 production "The Third Part of the Night", followed by the 1972 horror film "The Devil" which was halted by censors until 1988. Notable among his later productions is the 1981 film "Possession" with Sam Neill and Isabelle Adjani, for which Adjani received a Jury Award at the Cannes festival.

In 2015 Zulawski received a best director award at the Locarno Film Festival for his last film, the French-Portuguese co-production "Cosmos" based on a novel by Polish writer Witold Gombrowicz.

In 2002 Zulawski received the French Legion of Honour.

Zulawski left behind two sons, the Polish film director and screenwriter Xawery Zulawski, whose mother was the late Polish film star Malgorzata Braunek, and Vincent, born by French film actress Sophie Marceau. (PAP)
