Edward Dwurnik, a renowned painter and graphic designer, one of the best known contemporary Polish artists, died in Warsaw on Sunday at the age of 75, the artist's daughter, Pola Dwurnik, told PAP.

Dwurnik was born in 1943 in Radzymin near Warsaw. He lived and worked in the Polish capital. In the years 1963-1970 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw at the Faculty of Painting and, temporarily, at the Faculty of Sculpture.

His art won him numerous awards, including the award of art critics Cyprian Kamil Norwid (1981), the Solidarity Culture Award (1983), and the Coutts Contemporary Art Foundation's award (1992).

The artist's impressive output includes nearly 5,000 paintings, around 14,000 works on paper and 3,500 other images. He also made drawings and gouaches for the animated films Greengrocer, 360 degrees (Warzywniak, 360 stopni) (2007) and Oasis (Oaza) (2009 directed by Andrzej Barański).

Several documentary films have been made about Dwurnik's work, including The fruits of the Earth (Owoce Ziemi) (1977), Portrait from Nature (Portret z natury) (1984), Polish Nike (Polska Nike) (1978) directed by Andrzej Szczygieł, and Podróże Edwarda Dwurnika (Dwornik's Travels) (1995) directed by Grażyna Banaszkiewicz.
