The Hungarian ambassador received a formal protest from Warsaw concerning the asylum granted by Budapest to a wanted Polish former deputy justice minister, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) spokesperson has announced.

Pawel Wronski confirmed the Polish ministry had handed the Hungarian ambassador a formal protest on Friday and that it had also summoned the Polish ambassador to Hungary for open-ended consultations.

On Thursday, Hungary offered political asylum to Marcin Romanowski, a deputy justice minister in the former Law and Justice (PiS) government, who is being sought under the European Arrest Warrant and suspected of defrauding millions from a special-purpose fund.

Budapest's decision infuriated the Polish government, which had vowed to bring to justice some former government officials who ostensibly broke the law during the eight-year rule of PiS. (PAP)
